[A creator of poetry and prose under
the pen-name of Ispat (steel), Deepak Kumar is a political prisoner.
Accused of being a Maoist, he has been imprisoned in the Presidency
Jail, Kolkata since 2012. Born and brought up in the rural areas of
Chattisgarh, Deepak Kumar worked as a technician at the Bhilai steel
plant from 1995 to 2009. During this period he got a number of awards
for his work proficiency, including the national “Viswakarma award”
in 2005 from the labour department of the central government.
While working as an industrial worker,
he had the chance of looking closely at the lives of the labouring
masses. As a result he started writing poetry under the pen name of
“Ispat”. The life struggles and internal conflicts, pains and
frustrations of the workers became the focal point of his poems.
Being involved in a number of
progressive movements, he came into contact with the revolutionary
movement during the period of the state sponsored terror campaign of
Salwa Judum. From 2009 he became fully involved with this movement.
In the prison too he has continued with
his literary creations. Utilizing the time in prison he has also
started to write essays and short stories, together with poetry. His
writing continues till today…
Deepak Kumar was recently accused by
the prison authorities of attempting a jail break together with
another inmate. Since then he has been subjected to severe
repression, including solitary confinement, against which he had
initiated a hunger strike. Severe restrictions have been imposed on
other political prisoners also. Sanhati received this set of poems
and essays by Deepak Kumar from the Presidency Jail, Kolkata. We are
publishing this to express our solidarity with and to focus public
attention on this indomitable spirit imprisoned by the Indian state.

निबंधकार दीपक कुमार एक राजनीतिक
कैदी है जो की “इस्पात” कल्पित
नाम (पेन नाम ) से
कविता और गद्य लिखते है । वे
माओवादी होने के आरोप में 2012
से प्रेसीडेंसी जेल,
कोलकाता में कैद है
।
छत्तीसगढ़
के ग्रामीण इलाके में जन्मे
और पले-बढ़े दीपक ने
1995 से 2009 तक
भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र में एक
तकनीशियन के रूप में काम किया
। अपने काम में दक्षता एवं
प्रवीणता के लिए केन्द्र सरकार
के श्रम विभाग की ओर से 2005
में ‘राष्ट्रीय
विश्वकर्मा पुरस्कार “सहित
दीपक को कई पुरस्कार मिले है
। एक औद्योगिक श्रमिक के रूप
में काम कर कर रहे दीपक को
मज़दूरों के जीवन को नज़दीक एवं
बारीकी से देखने का मौका मिला
।
इस संवेदना
ने दीपक को “इस्पात” नाम से
कविता लिखने के लिए प्रेरित
किया और जीवन के दैन्दिनी
संघर्ष , दर्द और
श्रमिकों की हताशाये उनकी
कविताओं का केन्द्र बिन्दु
बन गया।
प्रगतिशील
आंदोलनों में निरंतर भागीदारी
होने के नाते, वह
सलवा जुडूम के राज्य प्रायोजित
आतंकवादी अभियान के दौरान वह
क्रांतिकारी आंदोलन के साथ
संपर्क में आये और 2009 से
वह इस आंदोलन के साथ पूरी तरह
से जुड़ गए । उन्होंने जेल में
भी अपने साहित्यिक सृजन को
जारी रखा। जेल में इस समय का
उपयोग वह कविता के साथ साथ,
निबंध और लघु कथाएँ
लिखने के लिए सुरु किया है ।
उनके लेखन का क्रम आज तक जारी
है …

पे हाल ही जेल अधिकारियों
द्वारा जेल में एक और कैदी के
साथ मिलकर जेल तोड़ने के प्रयास
का आरोप लगाया गया था । इसके
बाद से उनपे एवं अन्य राजनैतिक
कैदियों पे जेल में भीषण उत्पीड़न
और दमन जिसमे एकांतिक कारावास
सहित कई तरह के प्रतिबंध भी
शामिल है, लगा कर
उनको प्रताड़ित किया जा रहा
है जिसके विरोध स्वरुप उन्होंने
भूख हड़ताल शुरू की थी
संहति को
प्रेसीडेंसी जेल, कोलकाता
से दीपक कुमार की कविताओं और
निबंध का यह सेट प्राप्त हुआ
है ।]
